The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Central and the State governments to examine a web site in Uzhakudi village in Thoothukudi district to determine if an archaeological excavation might be carried on the market and file a report earlier than it.
A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and S. Ananthi sought the response from the Centre and the State on a public curiosity litigation petition filed by S. Kamaraj of Thoothukudi district who claimed that the location was of historic significance.
He stated that Uzhakudi was located on the japanese financial institution of the Thamirabarani and was positioned 38 km away from Thoothukudi. He stated that megalithic stones had been found in a hill abutting the village by native residents. The petitioner claimed that menhirs had been erected in reminiscence of some kings and chieftains. He stated that the stones had been 13 toes tall and will date again to 1000 BC.
The web site was near the opposite well-known archaeological websites like Adichanallur, Sivagalai and Korkai, and the authorities involved should conduct an archaeological excavation at the location and declare Uzhakudi a protected space, he stated.
