Woman Dalit pradhan in U.P. ‘insulted’ by locals during video meet with officers; one arrested

A newly-elected girl Dalit gram pradhan in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba has alleged that some folks requested her to get off the chair, grabbed her hand inappropriately and used casteist slurs towards her whereas she was attending a digital assembly in the village panchayat bhavan with senior district officers.

Following a police grievance lodged by her husband, an FIR was lodged towards 4 individuals and 6 unidentified others on fees of assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a lady, felony intimidation and different related clauses of the Indian Penal Code.

On June 2, the pradhan, alongside with her husband, a pc technician and others was attending a video conferencing with senior district officers, together with the District Magistrate, on the panchayat bhavan in her village. The bhavan apparently falls in the locality of the Lodh group, an OBC caste, to which the 4 primary accused belong.

Around 10.15 a.m., data the FIR, some youth entered the room and allegedly bought into an altercation with her. The pradhan stated the primary accused Ramu Rajput insisted that she increase the difficulty of cleanliness and faucets in the village in the assembly regardless that she had already lodged a grievance with the officers.

One of the accused males then grabbed her hand with “bad intention” and used a casteist slur focused at her group, stated the gram pradhan’s husband in his police grievance. The household belongs to the Jatav sub-caste of SC, the biggest Dalit group in Uttar Pradesh.

As per the FIR, the accused then allegedly advised her, “You are seated on a chair in front of us!” and pulled her down from the chair.

They then allegedly beginning abusing her with casteist slurs and stated that “if you want to operate as a pradhan, then you have to do as we instruct you,” her husband stated in the police grievance.
