This follows the transfer to receive Environmental Clearances for exploratory drilling of 5 wells in L-1 PML block in Cuddalore district.
The Cauvery Delta Farmers Federation has condemned the proposed transfer of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd. to perform exploration of hydrocarbons in Cuddalore district.
The opposition comes within the wake of Cauvery Basin, ONGC, Chennai, initiating the proposal for acquiring Environmental Clearances (EC) for exploratory drilling of 5 wells in L-1 PML block within the district.
Federation president K.V. Elangeeran stated that farmers wouldn’t permit the initiatives to take off at any value.
Terming the venture a “threat to the livelihood of farmers”, he stated that the Union authorities was attempting to flip the Cauvery Delta area, the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, right into a “desert” by implementing the venture.
The federation urged the State authorities to convey its robust opposition by adopting a recent resolution within the Assembly.
“The resolution should also include previous projects that had been awarded to Vedanta and ONGC in the Delta region.”
“Further, the State government must bring all districts in the Delta region under the ambit of the Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act, 2020,” he stated.
Mr. Elangeeran claimed that if the area turned barren, the demand for Cauvery water from Karnataka wouldn’t come up and this appeared to be the intention of the Centre.
The State authorities ought to be cautious and register its protest against the transfer, he added.
