Andal temple elephant not injured, say officials

The temple elephant that was crushed up by its mahout and one other man on the rejuvenation camp in Thekkampatti, close to Mettupalayam, was not injured, official sources mentioned.

On Sunday, a clip of elephant Jayamalyatha from the Andal temple in Srivilliputhur being caned by its mahout Vinil Kumar, 46, and one other caretaker Sivaprasath, 32, on the camp premises was broadly shared on social media platforms. This prompted the Puucho Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department to droop the mahout, following which the Forest Department arrested him and the caretaker.
Forest Department officials mentioned on Monday that the incident occurred on Saturday night and that the duo had been booked below Section 13 (Acts that are tantamount to cruelty to elephant) of Tamil Nadu Captive Elephant (Management and Maintenance) Rules, 2011 and part 51 (Penalties) of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. They had been remanded in judicial custody on the Avinashi sub-jail.
HR&CE Department sources mentioned a committee, comprising veterinarians from the Forest Department and the Department of Animal Husbandry, inspected the 19-year-old Jayamalyatha and located it to be wholesome with out struggling any accidents. The remaining 25 elephants within the camp had been additionally inspected.
Following the mahout’s arrest, the HR&CE Department allowed Subramaniam from Tiruchendur, who has been taking care of Jayamalyatha for the previous three years on the rejuvenation camp, to maintain the elephant on the camp.
