While banking is an important service, the employees aren’t handled as frontline employees
Deaths resulting from COVID have despatched ripples of concern amongst financial institution employees in the State. The employees of the nationalised and personal banks are in a tizzy with optimistic instances and deaths being added to the record on daily basis.
Forty-five- year-old Anand Kishore, a financial institution worker, is inconsolable as his shut pal in the financial institution succumbed to COVID a few days in the past. “There was not a single day at the chest (branches of selected banks authorised by the RBI to stock rupee notes and coins) that Suresh and I missed sharing our lunch boxes. It’s still unbelievable that Suresh is no more. I don’t like to open my lunch pack,” he says.
It is among the 175-plus loss of life instances in the State. The spike in optimistic instances and deaths, with banking being deemed an important service, has raised issues in the banking fraternity. More than 4,500 energetic instances is a worrying issue for the employees.
Andhra Bank Award Employees Union (ABAEU) State president M. Kishore Babu says, “So far and 175 of them died during the ‘second wave’ in the last month. Employees are in panic mode.”
United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) convener B.S. Rambabu level out that whereas banking was an important service, financial institution employees weren’t handled as frontline employees. There was no rhyme and motive behind the principles and rules by the managements. Though the enterprise hours had been from 9 a.m. to 12 midday, the employees had been pressured to stay in the department until 4 p.m. Better cleanliness on the branches and extra flexibility in work schedules had been want of the hour, he says.
Mr. Kishore Babu says the employees had been being requested to clock in further hours even supposing deaths had been on rise. The focus of banks needs to be, now, on getting the employees vaccinated. The authorities didn’t take into account the requests regardless of their being frontline employees, he says.
The managements had been demanding the employees to supply physician certificates to go on sick depart. “We are being intimidated that disciplinary action would be taken if we insist on leave,” laments an worker.
There are not any thermal scanners on the branches. Most of the branches haven’t any safety guard to manage the guests. Due to lack of house, it is extremely troublesome to keep up bodily distance.” he says.
