Cauvery: Karnataka conveys concerns to Centre

Karnataka’s concern about Tamil Nadu’s plans to utilise extra water within the Cauvery basin was conveyed to the Union Minister for Water Resources Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday.
Karnataka’s Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation Ramesh Jarkiholi met the Union Minister in Delhi to focus on the water tasks of the State, and he raised the problem through the assembly.
The Minister orally expressed his concern and spoke concerning the State’s stand on the utilisation of the surplus water within the Cauvery basin, sources within the Minister’s workplace stated. “No memorandum has been given to the Centre yet.”

Meanwhile, sources stated the modalities of funding the Upper Bhadra challenge, which obtained nationwide standing not too long ago, was mentioned through the assembly. “It has been broadly agreed that the project will be implemented with 90% funding from the Centre.”
The about two-decade-old challenge, now estimated to price about ₹21,500 crore, was the primary water challenge of the State to obtain nationwide standing. The challenge has been conceived to irrigate about 2.25 lakh hectares throughout Central Karnataka districts of Chitradurga, Davangere, Tumakuru, and dry areas of Chikkamagalur. Agricultural land shall be irrigated by means of drip irrigation below the challenge.
