Centuries-old granary gets a facelift

The Department of Archaeology just lately renovated a granary of the Nayak interval and erected a fence round it. It stands because the Nayak kings’ contribution to the Chola-era Palaivananathar temple at Thirupalaithurai on the Kumbakonam-Thanjavur street.
The round granary was constructed by Govinda Dikshitar, who was the instructor and chief minister of Ragunatha Naik and his father Achuthappa Naik.
Ragunatha Naik dominated Thanjavur between 1600 and 1634. The granary close to the doorway of the temple was used to retailer paddy harvested from the fields.
“We plastered and removed broken bricks and replaced them with new bricks,” stated K. Olimalik, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Archaeology Department.
The round brick construction is 36 ft tall and 80 ft vast. It is conical on the high and has three openings — one on the decrease finish, one other on the centre and one more one on the high. Approximately 3,000 ‘kalams’ might be saved within the granary. One ‘kalam’ is the same as 96 ‘padi’. Mr. Olimalik stated there was a staircase resulting in the granary. “It is made of metal and we have decided to convert it into a wooden staircase,” he stated.
