Dedicated freight service begins at Vijayawada airport

The first devoted freight service from Vijayawada International Airport started on Saturday with the SpiceJet’s cargo service, SpiceXpress, taking off to Kolkata with items weighing about 15 tonnes.
Airport Director G. Madhusudhana Rao, together with Domestic Cargo Terminal custodian K. Venkata Rama Rao, SpiceJet’s cargo gross sales supervisor (South) K. Siva Kumar, and AAI cargo supervisor Abraham Lincoln, formally inaugurated the service on the airport premises.
The scheduled cargo service plane, which can be operated thrice per week, was given the standard water cannon welcome at the airport.
Speaking on the event, Mr. Madhusudhana Rao mentioned the cargo terminal operation had begun in 2018, and solely stomach cargo transport was occurring since then.
Though a freight service was operated from time to time through the previous one 12 months, this was the first-ever devoted service, Mr. Rao mentioned, and added that it was a milestone within the historical past of the airport.
He mentioned that items may now be transported to far off locations in a matter of hours, which, in any other case, used to take a few days by street or rail, he mentioned.
“This is hugely beneficial for businessmen, farmers, aqua farmers and others within 200 km of the airport,” he added.
Freight costs
