Estimates ready for culverts beneath railway tracks

The Highways Department has drawn up an estimate of ₹40 crore for the development of cross culverts to hold floodwater beneath railway tracks at 5 areas in Chennai.
Two of them are in Vepery and the floodwater can be taken to the Buckingham Canal whereas three can be on GST Road close to the Dargah, the Vetri Theatre level in Chromepet and close to the Pallavaram flyover, defined an official supply.
The proposal, beneath which the highways would assemble lead off drains and the railways would construct the field culverts beneath the tracks, has been despatched to the State authorities for approval.
The works have been necessitated as a result of the present 1 m x 1 m culverts beneath the tracks are unable to hold the elevated stream of rainwater, resulting in stagnation of water on the street at these factors. “These culverts carry only about 60% of their capacity during rain due to silt and utility lines running through them occupying space,” one other official stated.
The proposed culverts can be bigger in capability and extra in numbers to hold extra water.
The floodwater from the GST Road can be emptied into the Pallavaram Periya Eri.
A resident of Pallavaram, M. Jayaraman, stated although the thought was good, it will solely find yourself bringing silt and dust into the lake.
“Perhaps the government can consider setting up mini stormwater treatment plants at the points where such water is let into waterbodies, which in many cases are drinking water sources,” he stated.
