An NGO mentioned Prateek Hajela manipulated household tree verification in collaboration with some officers of migrant background
The NGO whose July 2009 petition within the Supreme Court led to the train of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam has filed a police grievance against former NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela.
In its first info report with the Additional Director-General of Police of the Criminal Investigation Department on June 21, the Assam Public Works (APW) mentioned Mr. Hajela manipulated the household tree verification throughout the NRC updating train.
He did this in collaboration with some officers of migrant background, knowledge entry operators, just a few minority leaders, and a few ‘anti-national elements’, APW’s Aabhijeet Sharma mentioned within the FIR.
Referring to an affidavit filed by Mr. Hajela’s successor Hitesh Dev Sarma within the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court, the APW mentioned the NRC checklist had many anomalies and the names of many unlawful and uncertain individuals have been included.
The draft NRC printed in August 2019 had disregarded the names of 19.06 lakh of some 3.3 crore candidates.
The inclusion of a really excessive proportion of unlawful and uncertain individuals’ names within the NRC pointed to manipulations within the household tree verification, the APW mentioned.
“We suspect that Prateek Hajela and his close associates in collaboration with some officers of migrant background, data entry operators, some minority leaders and some anti-national elements used the government mechanism to insert the names of the illegal migrants in the updated NRC,” it mentioned within the FIR.
Mr. Sharma mentioned the household tree verification would have been fool-proof had it been executed correctly. Under such verification, all of the offspring of a legacy particular person (a pre-1971 resident with whom the citizenship hyperlink is sought to be established) have been requested to submit their household particulars that have been analysed digitally.
The household tree verification didn’t work correctly as most NRC officers working in immigrant-dominated areas belonged to the immigrant neighborhood whose citizenship was by no means verified, the APW mentioned.
“The present NRC State Coordinator’s affidavits point to wrong uploading of results of family tree matching in 40% of the cases. This cannot be treated as normal human error; this was well planned and well-coordinated for including undeserving persons’ names in the NRC,” Mr. Sharma mentioned, arguing why a case needed to be registered against Mr. Hajela.
