From providing food to giving burials, this theatre group does a host of help for the homeless

At a time when theatre teams are struggling to discover work and grappling with loss of earnings, Thinai Nila Vaasigal, a theatre group in the metropolis, goes all out to the rescue of homeless folks from distributing food to giving a dignified burial throughout the pandemic.
Everyday, artists of this group collect at 7 a.m. to put together meal for the homeless. M Bagu, a 28-year-old who runs the theatre group, says they set out by 12 p.m. and distribute food for practically two hours. “We try to reach out to about 200-250 persons daily in various areas in the northern parts of the city, from homeless persons to relatives waiting outside hospitals. We pack lemon rice, puliotharai, sambar rice or vegetable biryani, usually along with a water bottle,” he says.
Post food distribution, after they get a name for burying unclaimed our bodies, they instantly depart. In this pandemic, they’ve given a dignified burial for practically 600 unclaimed our bodies in the metropolis. “We place a small garland and say a silent prayer before the burial,” he says.
At nights, they typically step out to present gloves, masks and a small field of snacks and sanitiser to the company employees too. “Without them, where will our city be? In some way or other we should be able to support them,” he provides.
Sometimes, in addition they give a haircut, clip the nails of the homeless individuals and provides them a pair of garments too. While it’s a fixed wrestle to discover funds to proceed providing food and for burial, they are saying, they someway handle.
K Gopi Karunanidhi, one other member of the group, says they carry out road performs to unfold consciousness on a host of points. “We have to be socially conscious and pitch in to make a difference in any small way to the society,” he says.
