Hathras-like incidents won’t be tolerated in Maharashtra: Uddhav

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday stated that Hathras-like incidents won’t be tolerated in the State and people indulging in crime towards girls would be handled severely.

His assertion comes amid a nationwide outrage over the demise of a 19-year-old Dalit lady from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on Tuesday, days after she was raped by 4 males on September 14.

Mr. Thackeray was talking whereas nearly inaugurating the newly-formed Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar police commissionerate.

“When incidents like the one happened in UP occur, we usually discuss it for a while and then forget. But in Maharashtra, such incidents will not be allowed to happen,” he stated.

“Hathras-like incidents will never be tolerated in Maharashtra. For that matter, any kind of crime against women, including harassment and eve-teasing, would be dealt with severely,” the Chief Minister stated.

There ought to be worry of police and they need to crush legal actions in the area, he added.

“Policing should be such that even if the police personnel are present everywhere, they are not visible, but people feel safe,” Mr. Thackeray stated.

He noticed that the necessity to have a separate police commissionerate for Mira Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar was long- pending.

State DGP Subodh Jaiswal stated the Maharashtra police handbook of 1935 has not not been revised and a brand new model is pending approval of the federal government.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated the proposal for the brand new police commissinerate remained on paper through the earlier authorities and it was dropped at actuality by the MVA authorities.
