KCCI wants MPEDA-approved laboratory in Mangaluru

The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to take up with the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry a proposal to arrange a Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) authorised fish and fisheries merchandise’ testing and certification laboratory in Mangaluru. This is aimed toward offering a lift toexports from the coastal and different components of Karnataka.
In a letter to the Additional Director-General of Foreign Trade, Bengaluru, on November 11, the president of KCCI Issac Vas stated that the institution of the laboratory will go a great distance in bettering the fisheries business and accelerating financial growth in the area.
He stated that the College of Fisheries in Mangaluru has given an in-principle approval for allotting house for the laboratory in Mangaluru.
The letter stated that undivided Dakshina Kannada is a hub for fishing industries. The two districts exported a median of 1.18 lakh tonnes of fish and fisheries’ merchandise each year.
For the export of fish and fisheries’ merchandise, the exporter should get the fish examined at a MPEDA Quality Control Laboratory and the closest one is at Kochi. This causes a delay of round six working days.
