A complete of 38 people have examined positive for the brand new U.K. variant of SARS-CoV-2 in India up to now, the Union Health Ministry stated on January 4.
State Helpline numbers for COVID-19
These embrace the 29 circumstances which had been introduced until January 1.
All these people have been stored in single room isolation in designated healthcare services by respective State governments and their shut contacts have additionally been put underneath quarantine, the Ministry stated.
Of the 38, the mutated U.K. pressure was detected in eight samples at National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), New Delhi, 11 in the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi, one in the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani (close to Kolkata), 5 in the National Institute of Virology in Pune, three in Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad and 10 had been sequenced on the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences Hospital (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. The NCBS, InSTEM in Bengaluru, CDFD in Hyderabad, ILS in Bhubaneswar and NCCS in Pune have up to now discovered no U.K. mutant virus, the Ministry stated.
“A total of 38 samples have been found to be positive with the new U.K. variant genome,” the Ministry stated.
It stated complete contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, household contacts and others.

Genome sequencing on different specimens is happening, it added.
“The situation is under careful watch and regular advice is being provided to the states for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing and dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs,” the Ministry acknowledged.
The positive COVID-19 samples are being examined at 10 INSACOG labs (NIBMG Kolkata, ILS Bhubaneswar, NIV Pune, NCCS Pune, CCMB Hyderabad, CDFD Hyderabad, InSTEM Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, IGIB Delhi and NCDC Delhi) for genome sequencing.
The presence of the brand new U.K. variant has already been reported by Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon and Singapore.
The authorities of India took cognizance of the studies of virus reported from the U.K. and put in place a proactive and preventive technique to detect and comprise the mutant variant, it stated.
This technique contains short-term suspension of all flights coming from the U.K. with impact from the midnight of December 23 until January 7 and necessary testing of all U.K.-returned air passengers by way of RT-PCR test. The samples of all U.K. returnees discovered positive in RT-PCR test will likely be genome sequenced by a consortium of 10 authorities labs — INSACOG. Further, all of the worldwide passengers who’ve arrived in India between December 9 to 22, if symptomatic and examined positive for COVID-19, will likely be subjected to genome sequencing as a part of the Centre’s technique to detect the mutated U.K. variant in them.
Others will likely be adopted up by the respective State and district surveillance officers and will likely be examined as per ICMR tips (even when asymptomatic) between fifth and tenth day, in line with the Union Health Ministry’s steerage doc on genomic sequencing.
Further, epidemiological surveillance of the passengers, who’ve arrived in India since November 23 will likely be performed in the group by way of lively observe up. Besides, normal working protocol for states and UTs to deal with the mutant variant of SARS-CoV-2 was issued on December 22.
