Hundreds of fishermen have come collectively to excavate a brand new river mouth to stop their villages from being inundated by the Rushikulya river in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
As the pure river mouth received choked, the sea-side villages confronted deluge as a result of overtopping of water. They had appealed to the district administration to assist discharge of river water into Bay of Bengal.
“Our repeated appeals fell on deaf ears. Subsequently, we took it upon ourselves to find a solution. Over 1,000 people from four villages joined hands and decided to dig an artificial mouth,” mentioned Magata Behera of Purunabandh village.
The fishermen had been additionally dealing with issues of docking their fishing boats alongside the seashore which was witnessing regular erosion. They wished a secured space for boat anchorage.
“For three days, people came with their own implements to dig a channel from the river to Bay of Bengal. They also pooled money to hire an earth-mover so that sand dunes could be moved at a faster pace,” mentioned Rabindra Kumar Sahu, a volunteer.
After three days of collective efforts, the villagers managed to create a channel.
Mr. Sahu mentioned the channel was necessary for the fisher-folks as they had been strolling a protracted distance to entry their boats. The new mouth would assist them take boats on to sea, he mentioned.
Residents of Purunabandha, Nolia Nuagaom, Sana Noliagaon, Gokharakuda, Padampeta and Kantigada would profit by the factitious river mouth.
