Prison officials in the dock for offering facilities to inmates for a price

Officials and safety personnel of the Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara are in the dock due to alleged corrupt actions inside the jail.
Based on an exposé aired by regional media, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and the Director General of Prisons Alok Mohan have sought particulars from officials involved and promised to provoke motion. An inside inquiry was ordered on Wednesday.
According to the report, the inmates pay the safety employees to get cigarettes, liquor, non-veg and meals from exterior, cellphones and even contraband. The report alleged that inmates have to pay hefty quantities to keep in a cell that has all the facilities like a range, water heater, fan and even a separate washroom.
The metropolis police had earlier carried out raids and confiscated cellphones which have been being operated from inside the jail for unlawful actions. Though there are jammers, the exposé alleged that the jail employees deactivated them to assist the inmates make calls.
The Central Prison, which is considered one of the largest in the nation, has been below the scanner earlier too. Senior IPS officer D. Roopa, previously DIG (Prisons), too had earlier reported to the authorities alleging that jail officials have been offering facilities to VIP inmates, together with expelled AIADMK chief V.K. Sasikala and faux stamp paper racket kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi.
