SC allows Kappan to see his mother via videoconference

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed a request made by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) of its secretary Sidhique Kappan, detained in a jail in Uttar Pradesh, to see his sick 90-year-old mother via videoconference.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde was assured by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, for Uttar Pradesh, that preparations can be made.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, for the KUWJ, mentioned Mr. Kappan’s mother had a while in the past expressed her want to see him earlier than she fell into an unconscious state.
In December, the Uttar Pradesh authorities objected to a plea by the KUWJ to launch Mr. Kappan. It described him as a “mastermind” with hyperlinks to riots and disturbing public tranquility nationwide.
He was detained in October by police whereas on his means with some others to go to Hathras, the place a Dalit lady was allegedly gang-raped and died later.
The State authorities, in an affidavit, had mentioned Mr. Kappan and his different co accused have been “mobilised towards” Hathras on the directions of Md. The State alleged that Mr. Kappan was instantly and carefully related to PFI members, who have been govt members of banned terrorist organisation SIMI (Students’ Islamic Movement of India).
The State has accused the KUWJ of deceptive the court docket by portraying Mr. Kappan as a journalist. It mentioned he was solely an occasional contributor to some media retailers.
