Small portion of Corporation building caves in

A Janakeeya Hotel, which has been functioning on the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s golden jubilee building close to the Overbridge Junction, was closed down quickly after a small portion of the building caved in.
It is one of the 17 Janakeeya Hotels run by the Corporation with Kudumbashree volunteers, to supply meals at inexpensive charges to the general public, particularly through the COVID-19- induced lockdown.
On Tuesday, no cooking occurred on the lodge, which is positioned on the bottom flooring of the four-storeyed building.
Due to the excessive demand at this centre, greater than 900 meals packets have been introduced right here from two different Janakeeya motels and offered off in no time. As many as 1,400 meals packets, every costing ₹20, are offered from right here on common days. Early on Monday morning, a piece of the building, which was getting used as a storage space by the Kudumbashree staff, caved in. The partitions contained in the kitchen too are in a harmful state, with giant cracks showing at some elements whereas another areas are virtually separated from the roof.
The 10 ladies who run the entire enterprise, together with buying, cooking, packing and gross sales, spend most of their day right here, with work for the breakfast starting at 2 a.m. every day and that of the dinner ending by 7 p.m.
Repair works
“The hotel was closed down temporarily since there are chances of it further caving in. Repair works will be carried out immediately. The estimates have been prepared and we are moving ahead with the tender proceedings. We are looking for alternate spaces,” says S. Salim, chairperson of the Corporation’s Welfare Standing Committee.
