DMK legislators M. Appavu and K. Pitchandi had been on Wednesday elected unopposed as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively of the sixteenth Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and so they assumed charge within the House.

Mr. Duraimurugan thanked the Opposition events for facilitating the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, unopposed. Mr. Palaniswami mentioned the Speaker was for all events within the House and may stay neutral. Quoting former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, Mr. Palaniswami mentioned the ruling celebration and the Opposition events within the legislature had been like two sides of the coin.
