Strongly opposing the assertion of his Karnataka counterpart over the proposal to assemble a dam throughout the Cauvery at Mekedatu, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday urged the Centre to not approve the plan.
He strongly advocated that Karnataka drop the proposal because it went towards the Supreme Court’s judgment.
Terming the reported assertion of Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa that the dam could be constructed quickly after the Centre accorded its approval as “arbitrary,” Mr. Stalin condemned it.
The Chief Minister recalled having opposed this proposal of a dam throughout the Cauvery throughout his assembly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday.
“The statement by Mr. Yediyurappa in such a situation is not only unfavourable for the good relations between the two States but also an attempt to deceive the farmers of Tamil Nadu,” he mentioned.
Tamil Nadu had been opposing the proposal for any dam throughout the Cauvery, contending that it was towards the Supreme Court’s judgment and would cut back the quantum of Cauvery water for the State.
In March 2015, the Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a unanimous decision towards Karnataka’s proposal and handed over a replica of the decision to the Prime Minister.
Mr. Stalin identified that there was litigation pending towards the proposal and referred to steady objections registered towards it earlier than the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
The Cauvery is the lifeline for lakhs of acres of farmlands in Tamil Nadu, particularly the delta area, which is named the “Rice Bowl” of the State.
