In the assertion in response to a writ petition alleging hunger on the islands, S. Asker Ali, Collector of Lakshadweep, stated that the administration was implementing the National Food Security Act in its letter and spirit. Besides, it had already carried out the one nation, one ration card scheme which enabled card-holders to get their foodgrain from any of the honest value retailers on the islands. These honest value retailers would open even in the course of the lockdown.
At current shutdown is in place on 4 islands — Kavarathi, Bitra, Kiltan and Minicoy — the place retailers promoting necessities and groceries have been allowed to open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Night curfew from 5 p.m. to six a.m. was in place on the remaining six islands — Agatti, Kadamath, Amini, Androth, Kalpeni and Chettlah.
