Supreme Court allows Vedanta to produce oxygen at Sterlite plant in Tamil Nadu

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Vedanta to function its oxygen manufacturing unit at its Sterlite Copper premises in Thoothukudi as a rare measure to tide over the nationwide scarcity of oxygen amid the second wave of COVID-19.
“The nation must stand together in this moment,” a Special Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud famous.
The high courtroom made it clear that it will not supplant the function of the High Courts in monitoring the disaster. The High Courts had a novel function to play.
“Supreme Court will supplement the work of HCs [High Courts]. The apex court will not remain a mute spectator at the time of a national crisis… We intend to play a complementary role to HCs. HCs have a valuable role to play,” the Special Bench stated.
The courtroom stated there must be no political bickering over oxygen era by Vedanta because the nation was dealing with a nationwide disaster.
The courtroom stated that the Tamil Nadu authorities had met stakeholders extensively each at the manager and political ranges and determined to let Vedanta function the plant, which might give you the option to produce up to 200 MT of liquid oxygen inside 10 days.
With this, the State overcame its preliminary objections to the reopening of the Vedanta premises, which have been closed in 2018 due to environmental issues.
“We are inclined to allow Vedanta’s prayer to operate the oxygen plant as a standalone unit. The order is passed only in view of the national need for oxygen. The order will not create any equity in favour of Vedanta,” Justice Chandrachud famous.
The Bench requested the Tamil Nadu authorities to kind a committee to monitor Vedanta, which is able to embrace the District Collector, Tuticorin; SP Tuticorin; District Environmental Engineer; Sub Collector Tuticorin; and two authorities officers with data of the affairs.
Vedanta won’t be allowed to enter and function the copper smelting plant below the garb of this order. It is in the character of an oversight panel. The committee will work in tandem with local people members and handle their considerations. The order will maintain floor until July 31.
