A driver working with the Chittoor West Division of the Forest Department was killed by a wild elephant close to Diguva Kanthalacheruvu village of Yadamarri mandal, near the Tamil Nadu border, on Wednesday late night. Another worker was mentioned to have escaped the assault.
According to sources, the jeep with two forest staff together with the driver on board was patrolling on the forest highway connecting the inter-State borders.
The elephant which emerged from the thickets waylaid the car. The staff waited for some time hoping that the animal would cross. However, it charged on the jeep, unprovoked. One worker jumped out of the car and managed to flee into the bushes. He returned after some time, solely to seek out the driver, recognized as Satish, useless and the car broken.
